Festival's Status
The "Golden Lion" International Theater Festival is recognized as an official state-scheduled cultural event in Ukraine, taking place every year in Lviv in early October. As a member of international networks like IETM and IFEA, the festival is backed by various government ministries, regional councils, and international funds. Such strong support ensures its vital role within the cultural landscape of both Ukraine and Europe.
Festival Lineup
The festival collaborates with renowned European festivals such as "Bitef" (Serbia), "Kontakt" (Poland), "Nitra" (Slovakia), and many others. Throughout its history, the "Golden Lion" has welcomed over 4,000 actors from Belarus, Turkmenistan, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Moldova, Serbia, Slovakia, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Germany, the United States, England, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, the Sakha Republic, Russia, Austria, and other countries. The festival's guest list features prominent theater stars like Ada Rogovtseva, Donatas Banionis, Rimas Tuminas, Roman Viktyuk, Daniel Olbrychski, Konstantin Raikin, Valentina Talyzina, Bohdan Stupka, Hryhoriy Hladiy, along with numerous foreign producers, directors, and renowned critics.
Its Place in Lviv's Cultural Life
The festival injects a breath of fresh air not only into the theatrical life of the city but also into Ukraine and Europe as a whole, providing a unique opportunity to experience the latest trends in theater arts and understand the contemporary language of the stage. According to J. Elsom, Honorary President of the International Association of Theatre Critics, “the festival helps attract tourists to Lviv, promotes the region and Ukraine, and enriches the residents of Lviv with an unforgettable cultural experience. The festival serves as another significant motivational factor for tourism development and could be an attractive opportunity for investment in tourism infrastructure.” During the festival, audiences can enjoy not only stage productions but also spectacular street performances across the squares of old Lviv, running day and night. Undoubtedly, every edition features a monumental theatrical carnival with artists participating from all corners of the globe.
